Ribolla Gialla: the “navigated” wine of Friuli Venezia Giulia

Home / Ribolla Gialla: the “navigated” wine of Friuli Venezia Giulia

Already famous during the Serenissima Republic of Venice, now even more throughout the world. Ribolla Gialla is a wine with an incredible maritime history, rediscovered and renewed in recent decades.

The first traces of Ribolla Gialla wine

The first historical sources of Ribolla Gialla wine date back to the Middle Ages. The written records in our possession, documents relating to transport, commercial duties, regulations and the like, refer to Ribolla as a real wine. The names of the grapes variety, on the other hand, were not mentioned in these documents and that is why we are not able to accurately trace which grapes were used.

The fame of Ribolla in Venice

We are certainly sure about the areas where the Ribolla Gialla was produced: Istria, the eastern hills of Friuli, Romagna and some Greek islands. In Venice, Ribolla was one of the “navigati” wines (from navigare = navigate), that is “foreign”, those wines which, like Malvasia, were transported by ships of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. There are numerous attestations collected in Italy, which demonstrate the success of this white wine at the time. It was also marketed outside the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, thanks to the Venetian and Florentine trade, so much so that Boccaccio spoke of it in 1375.

What was the ancient Ribolla Gialla wine like?

The Ribolla Gialla of the time was different from how we know it today. These wines were mainly white and sweet, very similar to those we now call “turbolini” (turbid) or “sweet filtered”. Obviously, depending on the production area, the vines and styles could vary up to reach wines similar to “vin santo” (holy wine).

What is The Ribolla Gialla wine to this day

Over time, the Ribolla Gialla identifies itself as an Italian white wine, which however experiences a period of abandonment in the modern era. A slow recovery began in 1990, a period in which some wineries in the central-eastern hilly area of Friuli Venezia Giulia decided to keep the historical link between that grape variety and the territory intact. With the new century, more and more Friulian wineries rediscover the Ribolla Gialla wine and thus the dedicated vineyard area, both on the top and in the countryside, grows. Over the years the profile of this famous Friulian white wine has also evolved, which is confirmed as mostly mono-varietal, produced with only Ribolla Gialla grape. The expression of the grape has expanded from the classic versions, fresher and more immediate to the complex, refined, even macerated versions of real orange wines, ending with the sparkling version.
